Information on Eczema

Eczema is a common allergic inflammatory dermatitis. It is an extremely upsetting condition, due to the itchiness of the skin and the lack of an effective treatment in conventional medicine.

Doctors in China believe that eczema is not caused by the skin itself, although it occurs on the skin. It is caused by internal pathogens, such as heat and dampness which build up in the body. Oriental medicine sees the human body as an organic whole and believes that it has a close relationship with the natural world. From this view point, eczema may be caused by food which is too damp or energetically ‘hot‘, or from stress which creates internal heat. Also, children naturally have more internal heat and more delicate digestive systems which makes them particularly prone to this condition.

Lifestyle & Dietary Advice

Eczema may be caused by stress, so it is always a good idea to try and deal with the underlying causes of stress whenever possible. Another possible cause of eczema is the consumption of energetically ‘hot’ and ‘damp’ foods and drinks.

If possible try to avoid the following if you are prone to eczema

Hot, spicy food
Coffee
Lamb
Onions & Garlic
Alcohol
Milk & Cheese
Chocolate
Fresh fruits and vegetables are usually neutral or cold in nature and are therefore good for eczema.
Exceptions to this rule are peach, tangerines and grapes.
