The Menopause

At about the age of 50, women begin the menopause. Some women may notice symptoms and signs of irregular menstruation, heat sensations in the body, abnormal perspiration , restlessness, irritability, palpitations, insomnia, dizziness, tinnitus, sore back, weakness of the knees, oedema, loose stools and abnormal emotions close to or after the menopause.

The Chinese believe it is important to treat menstrual problems in middle age in order to avoid menopausal syndrome. Avoidance of foods and drinks which create heat in the body is thought to be another way of helping to prevent problems. Such foods and drinks are coffee, spicy food, tobacco and sugar.

Oriental medical doctors believe treatments such as HRT suppress menopausal symptoms without dealing with the underlying problem. There is also a risk of developing breast cancer while taking HRT. Oriental medicine believes that HRT separates the two fundamental energies in the body, Yin and Yang, while Oriental medicine seeks to harmonise these energies.
